Bennett Wesley :: Six Years Old (tomorrow)

HO7A2778

Once again, I’m sitting here writing out another post for my oldest boy’s birthday.  Another trip around the sun for his beautiful soul.  Another blessing of a year in my life, having him as my son.  Where to begin?  This angel of a child who makes me proud to be his mama every single day, I don’t know where to start.  Let me try…

This boy… budding baseball player, avid martial arts student, math lover, dinosaur expert, reading extraordinaire… bicycle rider (two wheels only)- sometimes with only one hand(!!), master of interpretive dance, repetitive song listener (current fave is Thunderstruck by ACDC), maker of gourmet peanut butter and jelly sandwiches… role model big brother, focused student, and free drawing enthusiast… you are a rare gem, my handsome boy!

Ok, story time.

Bennett has always been a bit on the shy side, never thoroughly enjoying the spotlight and big crowds.  Last year for his birthday (of course Covid was new) we had a very small, family only, party for him and he was in heaven.  He loved it!  He’s a simple man, doesn’t need much to be content…  I absolutely love this about him.  So this year, I have chartered a fishing boat and captain for him and his best buddy and their dads to  go out tomorrow morning for some goooooood fishin’.  When I told him that’s what I planned and that family would come over later in the day to swim and have cake, he seemed totally fine with that idea.  Well, two days ago, I was at the school fundraiser art show and ran into two moms of kids in his class, both of which told me that Bennett, “invited them to his party on Saturday”…. ummmmm…. excuse me, what?!?  I explained to them that I had not planned a big party for him this year, that family was coming over and I was going to attempt to make a Oreo cookie cake for him… and they totally understood! I had to laugh for a moment, because this is SO unlike him… or maybe it IS!  As usual, I checked his take home folder that evening and saw a piece of paper with writing on it.  It said:

Bennett’s Birthday

3 days

(Lists 5 kids names- who I won’t mention) with check marks next to the names

Oreo

Cookie

Cake

For some reason, in that moment, as a mom, I felt like I had dropped the ball.  This whole time I’m thinking he doesn’t need a big party, he likes his small circle (just like mama), but in reality, this year he has gained a whole new confidence in himself that I must have overlooked.  It was so sweet and sad at the same time, that he made his own little invitation list and checked it off one by one as he invited his buddies from class.  Dropped. The. Ball.

I went to bed uneasy, but woke up refreshed!  I emailed his teacher, who is the sweetest by the way, and asked if he could bring cupcakes to school on Friday, she said YES, of course, and they will sing happy birthday to him and he will have that special time with his classmates :).  He was so excited getting ready for school today, because he knew the cupcakes would be happening.  It was so cute.  And I think he is still totally content with how his birthday will be tomorrow with his close buddy and family (and friends who are family).  I pinky promised him that next year, in first grade, when he turns seven, I will throw him the biggest birthday party and he will be able to invite whoever he wants- so if anything happens to me- Husband, you better fulfill my commitment!!!!  I think it’s so telling of how much he has matured this past year.  His confidence level has grown tremendously, and I’m in awe.  So proud of him, as always.

Bennett, I love you so much.  You are such a huge light in my life and I hope you shine brighter and brighter, as you have been, for the rest of yours!

This little man turned 8 months old on Saturday!  We were in Charleston, South Carolina for the Labor Day weekend, so this post is a few days late, but I would never forget to update on my sweet Remington!

Last time we were at the doctor’s office, he was 30.87 inches long (hundredth percentile) and 20.22 lbs.  BIG GUY!  Remember Bennett at 8 months? Gosh, look how much more hair Remy has than Bennett did at this age… crazy!  Like his big bro, Remy sure does love to eat.  He will try anything and everything.  He loves snacking on the puffs & yogurt bites, anything bread, and has taken a liking to chicken tenders and fries.  He is still eating pureed veggies/ fruit packs.  He especially like anything with sweet potato in it.  He has graduated to a medium flow nipple on the bottle, and soon I plan to let him start trying a sippy cup.  Bennett was drinking from a sippy cup at this age.

Remington is on the move with his crawling, he’s getting so fast!  He has been crawling slowly for a couple of weeks now, but recently he is getting faster and faster.  I gotta start picking up the dog bowls and vacuuming more!  He still loves a lot of interaction and still smiles all the time.  He is so happy!  He follows his brother around in his walker, which I think annoys Bennett a little bit.  He is just so curious as to what Bennett is playing with or doing, he wants so bad to play and have fun.

I’m not sure if you guys noticed, but Remy officially has 4 teeth!  The two middle lowers and the two middle tops!  He has been suffering with the teething so much lately, it seemed like every night for a month he has been needing tylenol to help with the pain.  Poor guy.

He is still sleeping really well at night, loves bath time and long walks in the stroller, still not a big fan of the car seat, loves watching and being around other kids, has been on something like 14 flights, and thoroughly enjoys floating in the pool.  He is just such a joy to have around, and I don’t even remember my world without his precious face!

Remington James, you are such a light in our lives!  I can’t wait to see what the rest of your first year of life holds!  You have been the sweetest addition to our little family, and I couldn’t be more proud to be your mommy!  Love you, my baby!

Bennett Wesley :: Two Years Old

Two years have come and gone with the blink of an eye.

At 10:15 this morning, my oldest little man turned two.  Today we woke up and had cinnamon rolls for breakfast.  We had our swim lesson, had our two year check up with the pediatrician (B weighs 27.25 pounds and is 38 inches tall), came home and swam in the pool, then ordered yummy pizza for dinner.  It has been a very normal day, yet I have been reminiscing on the last two years and how much my boy has grown.  He changes so much, but I’m really loving the stage we are in.  The stage where he gives unlimited kisses, always accepts a bear hug, squeezes into the smallest space next to me on the couch just to hold baby brother… it is really the sweetest time right now, I hope it continues to get better and better.

To the one who made me a mom… my precious Bennett,

You are such a special boy, everything about you is unique to you.  The way you can keep your excitement for anything under wraps, even though deep down I know you are totally stoked to see and do fun and adventurous things.  The way you can keep your cool around other kids who are losing their sh*t because they aren’t good at sharing, it’s admirable.  The way you can be so quiet in large groups, but get home and you can take the stage for an overly dramatic speech that includes changes in your tone and hand gestures.

Everyone that meets you tells me how well behaved you are, how chill you are, how laid back you are.  Although I know you have two sides, and that when you are home you are much more comfortable and can let loose, it still makes me so proud to hear other people admire your behavior in public.  You are so gentle, not destructive like most little boys (at least as of the last two years- this could change now that we are in the “terrible twos”).  You are much more interested in observing than doing.  But I think that this is more because you like to be 100% confident that you can do something before you do it.  You practice and practice until it’s perfect then all of sudden you are doing things with ease.

You are amazing to me in every way.  I adore everything about you.  You make my life so wonderful and I’m so proud to be your mommy.

Happy Birthday my oldest baby! I love you so much!
